Drosophila melanogaster are smaller (1/16"), wingless fruit flies. They're a perfect feeder for the smallest of the smallest reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
Drosophila hydei are larger (1/8"), flightless fruit flies (they have wings but cannot fly). They're perfect for small reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates when D. melanogaster fruit flies are just too small.
